The electrical components of ATEX Zone II Diesel Generator

For an ATEX Zone II-rated diesel generator (designed for areas where ignitable concentrations of gases or vapors are unlikely to occur, or only exist for short periods), electrical components must be rigorously protected to prevent them from acting as an ignition source.

The electrical system is typically designed using Ex n (Non-Sparking), Ex e (Increased Safety), or Ex d (Flameproof) protection concepts depending on the specific component's role.

Key Electrical Components

  • Alternator (Generator End):
    • Protection: Usually Ex nA (non-sparking).
    • Features: Enhanced insulation, increased clearance and creepage distances, and spark-free brushes (if brushless). Includes thermistors or RTDs embedded in the windings for continuous temperature monitoring to prevent overheating.
  • Control Panel & Monitoring System:
    • Protection: Often housed in Ex e or Ex nR (restricted breathing) enclosures.
    • Components: Intrinsically safe (Ex i) circuits are used for sensors and instrumentation to ensure energy levels remain below those capable of igniting an atmosphere, even under fault conditions.
  • Starting System (Starter Motor):
    • Protection: Typically Ex d (Flameproof) or Ex e.
    • Features: The housing is designed to withstand an internal explosion without transmitting it to the surrounding atmosphere. Electrical connections are sealed to prevent sparks from reaching the external environment.
  • Battery and Charging System:
    • Protection: Heavy-duty, gas-tight, and vibration-resistant batteries.
    • Features: Battery isolators/disconnect switches are often located in a separate, rated enclosure to ensure the system can be safely de-energized during maintenance.
  • Cable Glands and Junction Boxes:
    • Protection: Must be ATEX-certified for the specific zone.
    • Features: Use of armored cabling with Ex e or Ex d glands to ensure mechanical integrity and flameproof sealing at all entry points.
  • Sensors and Actuators:
    • Protection: Pressure switches, temperature transmitters, and solenoid valves are generally Ex i or Ex d.
    • Features: These are the most vulnerable points; they are specifically calibrated to be non-incendive during normal operation.
